How can I prevent heart disease?

The H&S Foundation indicates that the best defense is controlling the risk factors that could lead to coronary artery disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, stress, excessive alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and being overweight. However, there are some factors that you cannot control such as; age, gender, family history, ethnicity and history of stoke.

How exercise can help to cope with this heart conditions?

According to the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging, regular exercise can help you to achieve the following benefits:

 

  1. Lower the blood pressure
  2. Improve good (HDL) cholesterol and decrease bad (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides
  3. Reduce body fat
  4. Reduce stress levels.

Is there any exercise precaution that I need to consider?

The CCAA recommends the following precautions:

 

  1. The fitness professional need to be aware of your cardiovascular history.
  2. The fitness professional needs to follow the physician prescribed target heart rate.
  3. During your training session, it is recommended a gradual warm up and cool down.

How about a stroke?

The H&S defines a stroke as a sudden loss of brain function.   There are two types of stroke.   Ischemic stroke is when there is an interruption of flow of blood to the brain.   Hemorrhagic stroke is when there is a rupture of blood vessels in the brain.   Each area of the brain has a specific function and depend of the injury area, the effect of stroke may affect the ability to speak, move, etc.

You can prevent strokes by maintaining healthy body weight, good diet, normal blood pressure and healthy levels of cholesterol.

Are there any exercise recommendations after stroke?

The Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging, recommends:

 

  1. Exercise to enhance the mobility of lower and upper body.
  2. Special exercise to increase the balance.
  3. Strength training.
